Kenyan operator Safaricom has launched a new service that will enable its prepay subscribers to access airtime on credit and pay later. The service dubbed Okoa Jahazi (Save the moment) will initially allow prepay subscribers to access a KES 50 credit advance, applicable for calls and SMS to Safaricom lines only. Subscribers will be charged a service fee of KES 5 for the credit and will be required to repay the advance credit within three days using their next top-up. A subscriber who does not repay within 72 hours will not be allowed to use the facility again for a period of 30 days, while those with a pending balance will not be able to make another request. Initially the service will be available to subscribers who have been on the network for at least 12 months, and whose usage for the previous week is more than KES 50.
